Aims to be the best selling luxury sedan testing it brings a lot size, a diesel engine and surprisingly reasonably priced for what it offers.

We know that today the price is a key factor when purchasing a car, but that does not mean that, there are multiple versions of a model, we always buy the cheapest, because it usually means giving up a lot of equipment, power ... which do include the more expensive variants of the same model.

The conclusion seems clear: the basic versions, in general, is not interesting. But in a luxury sedan like the 5 Series, the 520d ED makes reference to engine capacity: two liters; the ' d 'defines that the diesel engine is and the term ED is the acronym EfficientDynamics , that BMW used to identify their lower-consumption vehicles, which represents the access step by price and power, is the exception that proves the rule, being the most recommended within the range of this model, because it meets a high note in the principal sections.


A little history of BMW 5-Series

This BMW 5 Series, which is located at an intermediate point within the range of signature Bavarian saloons, is located between the Series 3 and 7 - is a model with a long history, appearing in 1972 ... and in mid 2010, launched its sixth generation, so, our protagonist is a modern vehicle.

Of its range, the 520d ED 184 hp is the most 'affordable': € 40,900. A considerable amount, although similar to the Audi asks for a A6 2.0 TDI 177 hp € 39,300 - and lower than demand Mercedes E220 CDI for the 170 hp € 42,800.

For that money 'you get' much car, specifically a length of 4.90 m -is the largest 5 Series history- and with the typical design of BMW : elegant, streamlined, classy and gifted ... of a sporty touch.

Aesthetically, this version 520d ED is basic as the most powerful of the range ... except for three details.

A. - The design of unique alloy wheels 17 ".

2. - The logo refers to the engine and can be removed at no extra charge.

3. - His body lowered to improve aerodynamics, the Cx is an excellent 0.27 versus 0.28 of its good 'hermanos' -and thus, both consumption at constant speed as emissions- in fact, this version is the only BMW 5 Series in range that does not pay registration tax and 520d, involves a saving of 1,050 euros.

The inside is... what you would expect of a car in terms of design, quality or breadth: not that it is extremely spacious, but four adults can traveling in it with all the confort.

However, despite its high price, some gaps do exist equipment: you have to pay 347 euro for an outlet to plug in a USB, 556E for alarm and for folding rear seat 558E.

But where the 520d ED justifies much of its money is on the road. This version has an diesel of 184 hp, a number of excellent power for a 2.0 four cylinder because, to get an idea, the same power it was, a decade ago, offered by BMW 530d three-liter six-cylinder.

This mechanism is really good and, although the car weighs 1695 kg, is a very fast model, the 8.2 sec. investing to accelerate from 0 to 100 are similar to those of many mini-GTI and has very good response from low revs, which also guarantees fast forward.

In other words, you will never have the feeling on board that you go in a saloon underpowered and to make unnecessary spending of about € 6,900 extra to the version 525d 204 hp.

Of course, the best thing is how little cosume under any circumstances, be imposed on its rivals, as well as benefit -it is simpler than the computer dial between 6.0 and 6.5 liters ... so, first , you have numbers similar to that of a smaller compact, lighter and less powerful, and, secondly, it is easy to travel over 1,000 miles on a single tank.

Anything to improve? Idling and riding around town, the engine has a clearly 'diesel' sound.

Its chassis, in a word: 'left'

Given that this rear-drive sedan is ready to take 560 hp engines, it is easy to imagine how you can get this diesel version: the first thing that strikes us is that it is much more comfortable than the previous 5-Series to transmitting the uneven surface.

It is also very easy to drive, safe and noble at any speed, yes, the highest profile of your tires against a 'normal' 520d means that, if it is bumpy asphalt, their reactions are a little "lighter" than expected .

Still, not a big problem and, in general, this sedan is going very well in both highway and -surprisingly, given its weight and giant wheelbase- on roads slower and 'twisted'.

Meanwhile, the suspension is accurate and has adequate hardness, while the brakes obtain both good potency as note so that it is stable braking.


Inside and outside

As well... can not carry the M-Sport Kit available for other 5-Series (costs € 5,731) because it would hurt the aerodynamics and consumption.

Curious this version ... is standard, but you can choose from two types of 17" wheels plus other optional, just for 1,612 euros.

Paint: white and black is free ... plus 11 metallic options by 1091 euros and five exclusive for € 2,054.

For € 712, the doors can take a system which, when approaching the door the frame, close it completely.

BMW 5-Series 520d ED the best price and consumption: € 40,900 / 230 km / h / 4.5 l/100 km.

It's a BMW , do not you tell?

This dashboard is almost identical to what you find in the brand's flagship, the 7 Series, as well as a coupe and the Series 6 and soon, the Series 6 GranCoupι. Why BMW uses it in its most expensive and luxurious models?

As you expected, the design is very elegant, especially if you choose with wood inserts on the type of the picture, classical and quite simple, for all give the feeling that will not go out of style in many years.

In the same league quality inside is... very good, much better than the previous 5 Series and at the same level of the E-Class and A6. You perceive it ... even in the 'smell' of materials, touch plastics, the firmness with which the lids are closed or trigger buttons.


The details

The inside is well 'ventilated', because it has multiple vents, including two in the rear, and an efficient climate control. The 5 Series is so sophisticated that can bring the Internet and TV-all for ... almost € 2,500 - and even a night vision system, very expensive: 2,225 euros. It also has an magical button "What car do you want?" ... The driver can vary the response the steering and throttle actuating a control by the change.

What wheel would you like... As standard, with controls integrated and leather ... by EUR 278 can include heating, and 154E may have a sporty design.

Great ... Great seats, great posture, despite the voluminous center console and enough space.


Trunk: with 520 l, does not reach the 540 l of Mercedes E-Class, but is enough for five passengers' luggage.

The wipers: very effective and low noise when are running at high speed.

Lighting: the headlights bi-xenon € 1,035 - is very good, yes, the assistant beam can be improved.

The dual zone climate-there is a series of four zones by 524 € - and is quite effective, not noisy.

The controls are easy to locate, just have to get used to the handling of iDrive.

Although it can greatly improve the high-fidelity system-1.091e- carrying 600W amplifier may also include digital radio tuner € -501, high-end speakers € -657 and USB connector to € -347.

Better gas? ... The equivalent variation within the range is the 520i ... which, like diesel, also has a 2.0 turbo engine and 184 hp. This version surpasses the diesel in low noise, vibration, refinement and acceleration to 100km/h in 7.9 sec. (by 8.2 of 520d) but consumption yields 6.8 l on average, 2.3 more than the diesel and sale price is with € 1,500 more expensive: no compensation.


And compared to its rivals?

The Audi A6 2.0 TDI 177 hp is a very tough opponent, costs less than € 39,300, provides more trunk -530 l- and is almost as fast and economical -228 km / h and 4.9 l.
Meanwhile, the Mercedes E220 CDi has an image with more cache, has a 170 hp 2.2 engine that consumes more -5.3 l- and is more noisy. But the main drawback is the price: costs 42,800 euros without being more equipped than the BMW.
