U.S. drivers could get a new form of taxation: depending on the number of kilometers traveled.
The proposal is from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) in California. In order to calculate the mileage, vehicles must be equipped with a GPS device. Tax based on mileage, critics say, could have a huge impact on low-income drivers.
On the other hand, more relevant is a fee that takes into account the distance covered than a sales tax increase because it would affect those who drive frequently. After three years, the National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission proposed eliminating the fuel tax, drivers will be taxed according to kilometers crossed by 2020.
