CX-5 is the first of Mazda Japanese brand that comes with Kodo (soul movement) design language and comes from Minagi concept, introduced in March 2011 Geneva Auto Show. CX-5 is new in Mazda family and the car has the difficult task of competing in the market with cars like the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan. The Japanese seem to be a hit with CX-5, in many ways, but there's some embarrassing glitches.

Concept

Much more common is the Mazda CX-7, but Europeans trend to buy more and more compact SUVs has caused Mazda people to think about a "smaller" SUV.

So came the Duster, Mitsubishi ASX and many others, that after Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen have shown the world how a compact SUV looks. No wonder RAV4, Qashqai and Tiguan are so appreciated and sold.

Mazda CX-5 is the newest compact SUV appeared on the market and it shows that in some ways. On the other hand, looks like a car made in haste, they were neglected some details almost insignificant, but deteriorate the quality of experience that can have a CX-5 driver.

Design

The chapter in which the CX-5 scores very well is the design. It's an original car, expressive, and seems balanced, dynamic and powerful.

Inside can be given similar attributes. Sports steering wheel is small and light, clocks are with white-gray and they retain a touch of sportiness. It's hard to understand, however, why Mazda chose some red-light displays, typical for '90s, for graphics clock and air conditioning. Technology, comfort and equipment

Given all this, you may therefore believe that the CX-5 is relatively simple in construction, but with futuristic design. CX-5 is actually very sophisticated and engineers who built it deserves sincere appreciation.

As soon as you step into the cockpit did you notice how generous is the space offered, especially for rear seat. Armrest is large and hosts AUX and USB inputs. The overall design is somewhat minimalist. Behind this apparent simple design, lie top technologies.

For example, the RVM system monitors traffic back and sides of the car, warning the drivers if they enter in a dangerous situation. The accidents are in the blind spots of the cars, so to prevent the driver, he is warned by some witnesses lights placed in mirrors and two beeps. Technology is praised by Euro NCAP. Of course, the system can be deactivated by a switch on the dashboard.

Lane Departure Warning technology warns the driver from inadvertently leaving the lane. In other words, if you do not signal when changing lane, the car will think you fell asleep and begins to "scream". And this system can be easily disabled from a switch in the same area as for RVM.

Even more interesting is Smart City Brake Support. At speeds between 4 and 30 km / h, Mazda CX-5 can brake automatically if it detects an imminent collision. The technology is based on sensors and a camera mounted on the windshield, behind the central mirror. It first appeared on the Volvo XC60, then arrived at the Mercedes-Benz, Ford Focus and even the little Volkswagen up!

The high-tech infotainment system is complemented by the 5.8 inch screen and Bose audio system with nine speakers, which sounds great. Multimedia system has complex features, good screen resolution and excellent graphics. Can you use either a finger or using the joystick next to the handbrake, which is similar to BMW's iDrive, but cheaper. Too bad that processor is very slow and alter a lot of good first impression that they leave on the original multimedia system.

On Mazda CX-5, we found some embarrassing glitches.

For example, side mirrors and the hood vibrating visible to highway speeds and textile mats front clips have some very bad grip. This makes you to discover another minus: carpet is out too easily and seems trapped in joke ...

On the road

On the other hand, CX-5 to remain firmly on the road, partly due to electric power steering very well calibrated. CX-5 is a very easy car to its size and category, with a dry weight of under a ton and a half. The immediate consequence of low weight are good dynamic performance.

Mazda CX-5 has a whole philosophy of lightweight construction, and the Japanese automaker boasts especially with bumpers made of a new resin, which reduces weight by 20%. Speaking of the gearbox, this is a classic and has automatic six-speed plus reverse. It's a decent drive, but unimpressive. Becomes slightly indecisive if you want to drive aggressively and the lack of sports functions require you to use manual mode on mountain roads. CX-5 is not an SUV to wander the mountains, but do not give big emotions, however if you go on forest roads.
The car discourages you to put in the roughest land by the plunged nose. Nissan Qashqai, for example, has a 4 4 mode LOCK, which locks distributed power wheels in a ratio of 50% front to 50% back up to speeds of 40 km / h. In the absence of similar technologies, Mazda CX-5 is similar to Volkswagen Tiguan in terms of adapting to off-road. Distribution of power between the two axes is fully automatic.

The combination of a 2-liter petrol engine and automatic gearbox can make you think of the high consumption, but not quite. The CX-5 extra consumption is by 7.5 liters /100 km and in the city takes under 13 litres/100 km. That thanks to iStop (Start & Stop), which automatically stops the engine when not needed.

Conclusions

Mazda CX-5 is as it should be a Japanese car: simple, easy, efficient, well done and with the latest technologies on board, but has those ridiculous "mistakes" which give the impression that was not worked enough of it.
