Saab Automotive, the bankrupt Swedish carmaker, decided to suspend warranty coverage on vehicles in North America, besides all new cars will be sold. These instructions were given to Saab’s dealers this week, after the company feel into bankruptcy. The Swedish court recently approved the manufacturer’s bankruptcy petition in order to liquidate the company’s assets then pay the creditors.
According to the statement, Saab North America decided to suspend the payment and processing of all claims including; powertrain warranties, parts warranty, new car warranties, emission warranties, safety belts or airbags warranties, goodwill, recalls and campaigns.
This means that all new Saab models covered by a 50,000 miles, 4 years warranty, which include no charge scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance for three years, will be stopped. We can imagine how disappointed Saab consumers are, and they may decide complaining to the authorities on such decisions taken by the bankrupted automaker.
It is important to remember that General Motors covered Saab warranties and handled its sales till February 2010, and then Saab was bought by Swedish Automobile AB. Saab’s inventory in the United States settled at 2,400 cars on the first of December, while its U.S sales rose 22% in 2011 to record 5,340 vehicles.
There must be consequences for Saab’s decisions and we are waiting to see it, but nothing is clear till now. Yet, car owners and the authorities are expected to show some actions towards Saab that may change its policy.
