Opel has developed a lighting system of security, smart lighting using matrix LED technology. This lighting technology is new in the automotive industry and will provide an even greater driving safety at night.
Matrix headlights represents a new approach to lighting technology. In the new lighting concept, long beam is always the standard, rather than using the default short phase. By this approach, long beam is provided with an anti-glare and automatically adjusts to driving conditions.
Lighting system adapts to current traffic conditions faster than any other solution involving the driver maneuvers or based on mechanized elements.
"Active safety is a primary goal of the Opel technology strategy," said Rita Forst, Vice President Opel. "In 2002, Opel was the first automaker to introduce on the market a new system, Adaptive Front Lighting (AFL), a combination of dynamic curve lighting with xenon headlights and static cornering lights. At present, Opel started to revolutionize again the driving at night with intelligent lighting system matrix, the most advanced automotive lighting system in the world."
Lighting using matrix system works in combination with Opel front camera, which is located between the windshield and the rearview mirror. Once the sensors detect -in front- light sources from vehicles moving in front of the vehicle and oncoming lights in the area is completely reduced, while the rest remains light.
This system provides visibility of all unmarked obstacles, while road users will never be blind.
Exclusive use of LED lighting within the matrix has some significant advantages, as the new system consumes less energy than halogen lamps and other conventional methods. It uses only about half the energy consumed by halogen lamps. The two lighthouses matrix consist of four segments of lighting. Behind each segment there are four separate light sources that can be individually switched on or off, so there is sixteen possible combinations Adaptive Front Lighting per lamp.
Transitions between the 256 different lighting settings is performed smoothly and seamlessly, without the driver noticing it.
