Finally comes to our market the new Mazda phenomenon: an SUV determined to prove that the dynamic can work together with the functionality, roominess, fuel consumption and good emissions.
The Japanese model comes stomping a seemingly saturated segment, which will need to check with Toyota RAV 4, Audi Q3, BMW X1
, Volkswagen Tiguan
, Land Rover Freelander
, Honda CR-V
or Ford Kuga
, SUVs around fifteen feet, with five doors and access steps between 25 and 30,000 euros. Almost nothing.
But Mazda has clear ideas. The Hiroshima's company, which was able to recover in record time after the fall of the atomic bomb, which succeeded in bringing to production the unique rotary engine, which popularized the concept roadster that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans is not they embark on an adventure with no guarantee of success.
The CX-5 is an ambitious project, which begins with a winning spirit. Under aesthetics of classic proportions, without strident resources, hides a careful work that affects almost all of the constituent elements : the structure, made of steels of very high resistance to allow lightweight construction, the frame, with suspensions of high efficiency and, of course, the powertrain (engine and transmissions), designed for maximum performance with minimum consumption.
The range comes in first, with two trim levels, three engines (two diesel and one gasoline), choice of manual or automatic and all-wheel drive or only two wheels. The basic definition of the CX-5 would be the Style version, with engine 2.0 petrol, manual gearbox and wheel drive. A vehicle equipped enough and at a price of € 24,790 . Also, interestingly, the petrol version with two-wheel drive has 165 hp, five more than the 4 × 4.
Body and interior
With a width of 1,840 mm and wheelbase of 2,700 , the model has broader structural base of the segment, a record for occupancy and capacity. Although technically has five seats, the CX-5 is actually a 4 +1, for four adults traveling sufficiently comfortable, while the central square is for emergencies, short journeys or for children.
The trunk also deserves special attention: designed as a cube, without bumps or hollows rare, allows maximum use of space. Counting the space under the floor and no higher than the rear tray, you can have up to 503 liters capacity reaching up to 1,620 with the three modules of the rear seat folded down.
At the wheel, the driver has an elevated position with a panoramic view and all at your fingertips, with a clear and complete instrumentation center console on top headed for the big screen trip computer, in the lower find the remote HMI (Human Machine Interface) which, combined with the steering wheel buttons, allows control all functions of the infotainment system.
The offer consists of three engines : two diesel and one petrol. A curious feature is that everyone has the same compression ratio: 14:1, relatively low for a diesel but extraordinarily high for a petrol engine.
The diesel share displacement and power system for two-stage turbocharger. This definitely improves the response mechanism at low and mid range (reversing the traditional-but increasingly less responsive turbo-lag) and triggers the ability to climb around until the red zone located in the line of 5,200 rpm. This is also unusual in diesel engines. Both versions reach their maximum power ( 175 hp the 'High Power' and 150 hp the 'standard') at 4,500 rpm.
Also surprising precision work was done in the gasoline engine. Lighter, less friction, this engine has a compression only common in racing cars, very high performance, so it seems incredible that not lead to self-start problems, taking into account that runs on low octane fuel (95).
But the advantages are obvious: 15% more torque at low and medium engine speeds means better response and maximum efficiency where it matters most and, therefore, a significant reduction in consumption and emissions. The CX-5 achieved record results in its class: the most severe is the 150 hp diesel, in 4 × 2 version and manual gearbox is capable of achieving an official consumption of 5.4 liters per 100 kilometers on the urban route, 4.1 liters in the extra-urban and 4.6 in the combined (with emissions of just 119 g CO2 per kilometer). And to Gastona option, the Diesel 4 × 4 (the same with a manual gearbox with the automatic) remains at very reasonable figures, with 8.1 liters in city circuit of town and 5.8 in 6.6 in the combination of both.
Although this achievement have been related to other factors. Both engines have been prepared to take the intelligent stop-start system
i-Stop, able to restart the motor in 0.35 seconds in the case of gasoline and 0.40 seconds in the diesel. A record. And the concept of efficient technology SKYACTIV extends even to the transfer. For the CX-5 have developed two transmissions 6-speed: a manual, very fast and effective, with very short lever paths, based on that equips the sporty MX-5, and another automatic with sequential manual mode and function.
The particularity of the automatic transmission is that the torque converter works combined with a clutch gear lock, system that provides a smooth but strong torque, without energy loss by slip, with ratio changes very fast and a direct response to the movements of the accelerator. The feeling is almost transmitting a manual but without any roughness, which also contributes to, of course, a torsional damper coupled to the converter itself.
Security: Solutions almost robotic
The designers of the Mazda CX-5 also have stepped forward in the implementation of security systems. And not just in the construction of the structure (with a modular design also facilitates the exchange of parts and cheaper repairs), or seeking to protect their six airbags (front, side and curtain), the front seat belt pretensioners or lightened and reinforced seats... The CX-5 is equipped also with all kinds of acronyms.
Counting also, as standard, by multiple control applications on the anti-lock brakes system(ABS), stability (DSC), traction (TCS), force distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA ) and the hill start (HHA) ... the CX-5 also includes in its list of gadgets to assist the braking in city Brake Smart City. Equipped with an infrared sensor, the system is able to detect a risk of collision at low speed (the typical range for distraction) and stops at top, if necessary, to avoid the accident if it goes below 15 km / h or minimize damage if it runs less than 30.
Among the optional, security system has the beam control, which detects the lights of other vehicles and automatically switches between short and long, the system alert involuntary change lanes (LDW), which reads the lines on the road and warns if it detects a possible distraction. Lane change assistant (RVM , standard on the Luxury version), offers a good help to control the areas of blind spots: if another vehicle is in the area in an adjacent lane, the system warns the first illuminating a LED in the rearview mirror for emitting a beep and then from the instrument panel.
